New navigation screen 😊

On the way to Sweden we decide to buy a new navigation screen. The current screen (E120) fails at least once a day and seems to be getting slower ☺️. Now we often watch TV on the iPad outside and how nice it would be if we could also watch TV on a new navigation screen outside.
Toine is going to investigate. It should be about the same size as now and it must be possible to connect it to the screen at the chart table inside (like now) so that we can also navigate from inside; a real must for us!

Toine comes out on the Raymarine Axiom XL 16 inch. This is exactly the same size as the E120 but with more screen because the Axiom has a smaller outer bezel. This is the only model that has an hdmi output to connect to the inner screen and an hdmi input to connect the Apple TV. We order the screen from Hallberg Rassy Parts and can pick it up a few days later at a cheaper price than in the Netherlands.

What a wonderful system πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ. The operation is very intuitive, all touchscreen based with a much faster response time than the E120. The screen is much brighter and more visible from the steering position. We also have a console with buttons with it, but I guess we won't need it because the touchscreen works perfectly.

Additional benefits:
1. The thermal camera is accessible on this large screen. Previously only on the small A167 screen at the steering position.
2. Watching TV and Netflix works very well. Brighter and more visible in the sun than on the iPad.
3. Upon installation, Toine installed a second GPS on the stern seat. This gives us a spare GPS receiver on board.

The screen comes without a stand but with some creativity Toine manages to mount it on the old stand. Carl gives the stand a new coat of black paint and then it looks like new again. We are totally happy with it πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ.

The only thing that doesn't work so well yet is the protective cover for the screen. That's a rubber mat that doesn't automatically stay on the screen when it's mounted at an angle like ours. These screens are usually mounted flatter. But the RayMarine forum is full of comments about this 'cover' and a new one seems to be in the works. Until then, we put an elastic band on it at the top (hair band Mira πŸ˜‰ ) and it works well.
